Many puzzle over this magnificent city's seemingly unfitting name, Boca Raton, which literally translates to "Rat's Mouth." Actually, the word "boca" in Spanish also describes an inlet. "Raton" which indeed means rat, was an idiom used to describe cowardly thieves. Interestingly, "Boca Ratones" the "Theives Inlet," is found on eighteenth century maps of the Biscayne Bay area of Miami. Later, the name was mistakenly associated with the inlet in Lake Boca Raton, hence... the name. Early in the 20th century, the "e" and the "s" were dropped from the original spelling, but the correct pronunciation of the city's name is "Bo-Kah Rah-Tone."
